The third book in the series overall, this was first published on the 1st of August, 1993, shortly after the release of the first, as it features the next adventure for young Annie and Jack. Will they be able to ever discover their secrets and what’s going on there, and will they finally get to meet the person known as the Knight at Dawn? Mummies in the Morning There is a feast going on when they get there within the Great Gall and at first they are excited, but they soon realize that they are not so welcome there as they first thought. Heading back to the middle ages in their magic tree house, young Jack and Annie go on an adventure of medieval proportions as they go back to a time of kings and queens. With an element of danger, although not too much, it elevates them to an interesting set of stories like this one, whilst not taking away from the basic premise of learning. This along with the characters they meet along the way all works together to provide a much more rich and vibrant story, offering the historical exposition they and their readers require. Largely unseen, the parents themselves act as an unseen force who put the pressure on dramatically for the children to come home, thus providing the stories with a narrative anchor. Escaping out at night or whenever they can, they sneak away to the magical tree-house where they can travel through time to any period they like, unbeknownst to their parents. Each time dealing with a different theme and time period, they work to introduce their readers to a new set of ideas and a new subject to teach children in history. Starting off with Annie and Jack, two highly inquisitive children of seven and eight, it picks up with a new adventure where the last book left off. Taking children into a medieval time, it provides a great starting point for many young minds hoping to find out more upon the time period and setting. With Sal Murdocca as the illustrator, it’s a positive and colorful book for young children that can be enjoyed by all the family, whilst learning at the same time. Originally published on the 1st of January, 1993, this book has been reissued a number of times largely thanks to it being a much beloved novel being passed down the generations over the years. This is something that Mary Pope Osborne plans to continue as an author on into the foreseeable future. With a collection of non-fiction books that spin-off from it as well, it’s become not only a franchise, but an industry as well. There have been adaptations of this such as the 2011 animated film produced in Japan and released to a warm response in 2012. Teaching children as they read, it also helps inspire them to learn and take a fascination in history, as they get involved in the material.
